Faculty Administrative Supplements and Summer Salary Payments

Finance Assistant Director

What is a faculty administrative supplement?

These payments are made to faculty for the work done for approved administrative appointments (department chair, center/institute/program director, etc). These appointments are made by the dean and are documented in an appointment letter which is signed by the dean’s office. The Finance Assistant Director coordinates these payments - they will build and end these payments according to the appointment letter.

What is a faculty summer salary payment?

Commonly called “summer salary,” these payments are made to academic year faculty (i.e., on an academic year appointment) for their scholarly work during the summer. The funding for these payments is awarded to the faculty after their successful application to an external sponsoring agency. Faculty members on a 12-month contract are not eligible for summer salary payments.

Departmental staff are responsible for coordinating and building these payments via faculty jobs. If access to faculty jobs is needed, please contact Michelle LaCourt.

Summer salary payments are capped at a maximum of 1/9th of a faculty member’s academic year salary in any summer month. A faculty member cannot receive more than three months of summer salary payments during the months of June, July, and August.

What is a contractual summer salary payment?

These are payments that are listed in a faculty member’s contract, have been approved by the dean, and are usually paid within the first few years of hire. The Finance Assistant Director coordinates these payments - they will build and end these payments according to the approved contract language.
