Temporary Staff Hiring Process

Important things to know about temporary employment
- Temporary employees cannot work more than 900 hours in the first 12 months of temporary employment beginning with their hire date or then in any calendar year thereafter
- Temporary positions are generally non-exempt
- Non-exempt temporary positions must be paid on an hourly basis and overtime must be paid for any hours worked over 40 hours in a work week
- Temporary positions do not have to post on the ND.jobs site if the person being hired has already been identified
- Email askHR for next steps to move directly to the pre-employment process

Preferred Candidate
If you have a candidate in mind that you would like to hire for a temporary position, utilize the process below.
- Direct the person that you want to hire to submit their application using this link.
- As part of the application, they will need to input the name of the department/position for which they are applying.
- Once the application has been submitted, Bridget will initiate the hiring process with HR.
- Temporary employees must complete a criminal background check prior to the start date.
- Once the background check clears, you can build the job for new temporary employees in Personnel Actions.
Job Postings
If you do not have a preferred candidate, you can conduct a search through jobs.nd.edu.
- Use an existing temporary position number (T9####) to create the job posting. See your department administrator or coordinator for this information.
- Your department can review the application and conduct interviews. Please contact Bridget for approval of the hiring wage before making an offer.
- Once the candidate accepts, move the candidate to "Offered Position" in the jobs tool to initiate the hiring and background check processes with HR.
- Temporary employees must complete a criminal background check prior to the start date.
- Once the background check clears, you can build the job for new temporary employees in Personnel Actions.
