Research Proposal Preparation and Submission Timeline

Timelines go in effect March 1, 2024.

On this website, you can find a description of the services and expectations of the pre-award team, as well as the responsibilities of principal investigators/project directors, in the process of preparing and submitting proposals for extramural funding. To take full advantage of the services provided by the pre-award team, principal investigators/project directors must follow these timelines:

  • Initial notification/initial budget request: 3 weeks (15 business days) in advance
  • Final budget, justification, and draft proposal/statement of work (SOW): 1 week (5 business days) in advance
  • Final documents for submission (excluding final SOW): 2 business days in advance
  • Final SOW/project description/research strategy: 1 business day (and > 8 hours) in advance

Please note the above timelines are a minimum and more notice is always helpful. The initial notification of your intent to submit a proposal is made through the proposal intake form. This online calculator can assist in determining the relevant dates for your proposal timeline based on the sponsor deadline. Please note that some proposals with special circumstances, as outlined on the website, will require additional processing time.

You can find your assigned pre-award team member on the ND Research Website. Questions regarding these expectations can be directed to Liz Rulli (lrulli@nd.edu), Associate Vice President for Research.
