Journal Editors

College support for journals and journal editors can include space, teaching relief, and financial support. All proposals for support should be directed to the Associate Dean for Research, who will approve requests and issue a Journal Support Agreement.

A faculty member who is interested in seeking the assistance of the College in editing a journal should discuss the possibility with their chairperson and with the Associate Dean for Research before submitting a formal proposal for consideration. Note the following further stipulations:

Notre Dame Journals

  • When the need arises to (re)appoint editors-in-chief, the Associate Dean for Research, in consultation with relevant departments, will assess the journal’s current and future needs and prepare a detailed journal support agreement outlining the terms and conditions of the appointment.
  • The College will publicly announce editor-in-chief searches at least 6 months prior to the conclusion of a sitting editor-in-chief’s term. These announcements will include a brief description of the journal, the application process and deadlines, the editor-in-chief’s responsibilities, and any emoluments associated with the editorship of the journal.
  • The Associate Dean for Research may establish a search committee to lead and coordinate the search.
  • The Associate Dean for Research will appoint the editor-in-chief following consultation with the search committee, relevant department chairpersons, and others deemed important to the selection of the editor.
  • The editor-in-chief will select associate editors and section editors.
  • Emoluments will be based upon journal workload and impact. For editors-in-chief, these may include an annual stipend (generally in the form of summer salary), annual contributions to the editor’s R&PD account, and/or course release(s). For associate/section editors, these will typically be limited to an annual contribution to his or her R&PD account.

  • Computing infrastructure and support will be provided through normal ALCO policy and practice.
  • Appropriate space for conducting journal business will be provided.
  • Graduate editorial assistants, when needed, will be drawn from the pool of students on stipend in a given department and will be assigned editorial assistant duties by the DGS of their program as part of their regular service obligation. No additional stipends or other funds will be provided to support graduate editorial assistants.

Both the faculty member and the Associate Dean should sign this agreement, prior to accepting any editorship.
