This is a limited submission opportunity, which means that Notre Dame may only submit nominations for one tenured and one untenured (or pre-tenured) individual faculty member.

Focus: Our goal is to help Americans understand how and why our society has become so polarized and what can be done to strengthen the forces of cohesion. We are interested in solutions-focused, pathbreaking research from across the humanities and social sciences which may be relevant to polarization and social cohesion in America today. Offering a $200,000 honorific fellowship.

Eligibility: The University may nominate one tenured individual and one untenured individual to apply. This is a change from previous Carnegie Fellows competitions, where they allowed us to nominate one Tenured Faculty Member (10+ years post-Ph.D.) and one Untenured Faculty Member (less than 10 years post-Ph.D.).

Competitive applicants will demonstrate both compelling research plans and solutions to strengthen U.S. democracy. Interested candidates should also review the 2025 Fellows cohort and consider how their proposal is a distinctive contribution with relevance for a public audience.

Nominations are evaluated by the jury based on the following criteria:

• Originality and promise of the idea
• Quality of the proposal
• Potential impact on the field
• Plans to communicate findings to a broad audience
• Record of the nominee, including previous major awards or public recognitions like premium fellowships
