The Franco Family Institute will select up to two nominees for the Scholarly Writing Institute (SWI) at the National Humanities Center (NHC) in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, for the upcoming summer (July 2 - July 10, 2026). Please note: this opportunity is distinct from both the NHC's Summer Residency program as well as the NHC Residential Fellowship. Participation in this program will not affect eligibility for either of those programs in future cycles.
The SWI is an intensive, 10-day workshop that offers dedicated space for focused writing and consultations with highly acclaimed writing coach Helen Betya Rubinstein. Participants will also have the opportunity to learn more about the NHC's other programs, including the Residential Fellowship.
During the Institute, scholars will be provided with housing, breakfast, daily lunch with other residents in the NHC Commons, 24/7 access to a study, and assistance from library staff. The Franco Institute will cover these costs, but will not cover travel to and from North Carolina.
This opportunity is limited to Institutional Sponsors of the NHC—including Notre Dame—and our nominations are limited to two potential participants. Once nominated, the NHC will send each nominated scholar a unique link to the application portal in early February, and final applications will be due in late February. The final cohort of 20 participants will be competitively selected from the pool of nominees.
This opportunity is open to all regular faculty in the humanities.
If you are interested in potential nomination, please complete this Submittable form by 5:00 pm ET on Monday, January 19 with the following information:
- Name
- Department
- Brief description/abstract of current project (3-4 sentences, max. 150 words)
