Nominations are open for the 2026 Rev. Charles E. Sheedy, C.S.C. Award for Excellence in Teaching. The ideal candidate should demonstrate excellence in teaching (informed by excellent scholarship) across a wide range of courses and have made significant contributions at all levels of teaching (at both the graduate and undergraduate levels and, when appropriate, throughout or beyond the Notre Dame community). They should also motivate and enrich student learning using innovative and creative teaching methods.
Nominations may be made by students, faculty, or departments. A letter of nomination should give a detailed rationale for choosing this particular professor. Nominations will be accepted through Wednesday, April 15. Your nominee must have taught for at least 10 semesters at Notre Dame.
The entire review process is confidential. Please do not inform the faculty member that you are nominating them, as this will disqualify them from consideration.
Letters of nomination, and inquiries about faculty eligibility, may be sent to Associate Dean Mary Flannery via Katie Campbell (kcampbe9@nd.edu)
A list of previous award winners may be found here.
Thank you very much for your efforts in acknowledging the outstanding teaching performance of Arts and Letters faculty members. We'd like to be sure that a wide range of candidates will be considered. Once we receive the nominations, we will consult with the departments and solicit student input to create a shorter list of candidates who will then be evaluated by the Sheedy committee which is composed of former award winners. Please take a moment to recommend deserving colleagues.
